[CAUTION] Chase Credit Journey Free Credit Score May Be Inaccurate!
By Mark B. Huntley, Esq.
Last updated 7/11/2019
Summary: The Chase Credit Journey has become a popular credit building tool. You may find it useful as well, but be aware that the free Vantage credit score provided may not be accurate.
A word of caution...
Chase Credit Journey ℠ provides you with a TransUnion VantageScore 3.0 credit score which in many peoples' experience (including mine, see here ‘VantageScore 3.0 vs FICO Credit Score’) may be more volatile than any of your other credit scores.
Your TransUnion Vantage credit score is only one of the six principal scores you should be monitoring.
Basing your credit building decisions off of an unpredictable VantageScore could cause you to make the wrong choices.
But, more on that later...
I discovered Chase Credit Journey ℠ quite by accident when a series of articles I have been writing about ‘My Credit Journey to a 700 Credit Score’ started ranking on google search for the term ‘Credit Journey from Chase.’

Most of the Chase Credit Journey Members are Chase customers, but that is unfortunate because Credit Journey Chase is available to anyone absolutely for free.
This Chase Free Credit Score service includes a Vantage credit score for TransUnion (a word of caution later), a limited TransUnion credit report, credit score simulators, credit score tracking, credit education, credit card offers, personal loan offers, and mortgage offers.

What Is Chase Credit Journey ℠
The Chase CreditJourney was started in 2017 as a way for Chase customers, and anyone else who enrolled, to receive a Chase Free Credit Score and help people better monitor their credit.
The model is similar to Credit Sesame, Nerd Wallet, or Credit Karma; in which they provide members with a weekly updated credit score, alerts, and credit education articles.
They can provide these services for free by offering Chase Journey credit cards, personal loans, and mortgages for you to purchase.
So, ‘What is Chase Credit Journey?’
Two years after launch, the site feels like an economy budget version of the sites it attempted to knock off. (Credit Sesame, Nerd Wallet, & Credit Karma)
That being said, Credit Journey Chase offers some free but limited credit monitoring services and their credit education section does a thorough job covering the basics.
I think when large lenders attempt to educate on credit building, they are constrained within their writings because they are much more vulnerable to lawsuits for ambiguous advice.
This makes their articles and advice read ‘by the book’ and feel like you are reading a college textbook, sometimes.

What Does Chase Credit Journey Cost
You may be wondering, ‘What does Chase Credit Journey cost?’
Say what, ‘Is Chase Credit Journey free?’
Well, my Chase - credit journey membership was free to enroll and free to access all of the services once I joined and logged in.
The Chase Bank member dashboard does not attempt to sell anything or push any products upon you.
In fact, if you want to shop for a Chase Journey credit card, personal loan or a mortgage, you will need to go to the ‘Offer’ tab in the Chase dashboard.
Does Chase Credit Journey cost money?
Only if you elect to take them up on one of their Chase Journey credit card, personal loan or mortgage offers; is Chase credit journey free.
Chase Credit Journey provides a free credit score, email alerts and monitoring services - even if you are not a customer.
Is Chase Credit Journey Safe
With all of the data breaches seemingly going on daily, a good question to be asking, 'Is Chase Credit Journey safe?'
Considering that by enrolling you are giving Credit Journey Chase Bank access to your credit records and score which, if ever breached, could be used to steal your identity.
According to Credit Journey Chase Banks FAQ’s a multiple step identification process is used to confirm your identity and keep Chase Credit Journey safe.
“This process confirms your identity either with a one-time Security PIN sent to your phone number or through a series of questions based on the account and personal information in your credit report. If your phone number can't be verified, you'll be asked to answer the questions.”
The questions are based on the information found within your credit report and are presented in multiple choice form.
You must answer multiple questions correctly to confirm your identity and if you are unable to, you will be given an alternate option for identification.
Is your Chase Credit Journey not working or allowing you to login?
If you are still unable to confirm your identity and after these attempts, you can contact TransUnion customer service representatives Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 9 pm (Est) at 1-844-343-5929.
Once speaking with the credit agency and confirming your identity, you will be given access to your My Chase Credit Journey account for free.
What Is The Chase Credit Journey Login To The Members Dashboard
If you are new to Chase Bank Credit Journey you can become a member for free by enrolling here.
After enrolling you can go to the Chase Credit Journey login page by clicking here.
The Credit Journey By Chase Bank dashboard displays your TransUnion VantageScore 3.0 Chase credit score journey when you login.
The dashboard also provides a snapshot of the key factors affecting your credit, including; Late Payments, Oldest Account, Credit Usage, Hard Inquiries, Total Balances, and Available Credit.
You will also have access to a credit report alerts section when you sign in to your credit journey by chase bank account.
The alerts will show any changes, additions, corrections or deletions, to your TransUnion credit report.
You also will be able to look at Chase My Credit Journey Offers of credit cards, personal loans, and mortgages.
When I sign in I look forward to checking one of the nicest features about Chase – Credit Journey is the TransUnion limited credit report.
This report is pretty inclusive, especially since it is free, it includes all the financial information TransUnion has collected about you and is used to determine your credit score for FICO and Vantage Score.
Be sure to take a good look at your TransUnion credit report and make sure that everything is correct.
Credit Journey By Chase provides you with the ability to view and manage your TransUnion credit report which is unique and unlike many of Chase's competitors, such as Credit Karma or Nerd Wallet.
While reviewing your report, if you find a record that has any mistake on it, under Section 609 in the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) you can request to have it verified.
If the lender or furnisher of the information is unable to verify the record then the credit agency will delete it from your account.
To learn how to write a do-it-yourself (DIY) credit dispute letter, I have written a ‘How to submit a section 609 letter’.
Is The Chase Free Credit Score Actually Free?
Many people sign up and become members of Credit Journey By Chase Bank for the Chase free credit score.
But what type of "free score" do they get?
I feel like the term FICO credit score is commonly understood, and generally, people know that there are three major credit bureaus; Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
Each of these credit agencies collects information about you from lenders, collection agencies, public records, and numerous other sources.
When a lender wants to make a loan, they select one of the three credit agencies and purchase your credit history, which is then used to calculate your FICO credit score.
My Equifax, TransUnion, & Experian FICO credit scores provided by MyFICO, as of May 26 - June 4, 2019.
What that means is you will have one FICO Score 8 (most common risk score) for each of the three credit agencies (Experian and Equifax actually offer 16 different FICO credit scores)
For instance, my FICO (Score 8) credit scores and VantageScore 3.0 scores are (as of 6/8/19):
FICO Credit Scores
If you have MyFico, you would have access to all three of your FICO credit scores, too.
Do you understand that you are not getting a free FICO credit score with Chase Journey?
This is because the Chase credit score journey you are given is not a FICO credit score, but it is generated by its quasi-sort-of competitor VantageScore 3.0.
Vantage credit scores are a joint venture between the big three credit agencies: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
What you are actually getting with your Credit Journey from Chase is a TransUnion VantageScore 3.0 which has nothing to do with your FICO score.
The problem with the Vantage 3.0 credit score is that it is highly volatile and more likely to experience extreme credit score gains and losses, unlike the more popular and well known FICO credit score.
Even more frightening is that sometimes your VantageScore is much higher or lower than any of your other credit scores including other bureaus' Vantage scores.
Could you imagine how that could affect your interest rate on a new car loan if the lender were to pull your one, super-low VantageScore?
It could cost you thousands in additional interest or even possibly cause you to be denied for the loan!
At this very time, my TransUnion VantageScore 3.0 is 545 on my Chase Journey Credit Score account.
My TransUnion VantageScore 3.0 comes free with my Chase - Credit Journey account, 545 as of June 7, 2019.
My TransUnion FICO credit score is 612, which is 67 points higher than my TransUnion VantageScore.
What the heck? Right!?!?
The rest of my FICO and Vantage credit scores are all over 600.
How can VantageScore take the same TransUnion records and calculate a Credit Journey Chase credit score 67 points lower than what FICO calculated with the exact same information?
My Equifax and TransUnion VantageScore comes free with my Credit Karma account, as of June 8, 2019.
The answer should be that VantageScore and FICO weigh the information in my TransUnion records differently.
While that statement is 100% true because VantageScore values payment history and length of credit history more than FICO.
But the additional weighted value is not enough to create a 67 point difference in only one of my Vantage scores.
One could argue that maybe something is wrong with FICO, but all FIVE of my other credit scores are over 600, so this seems like a severe reliability problem with the TransUnion VantageScore algorithm.
My Experian VantageScore 3.0 comes free with my Credit One credit card, 623 as of May 19, 2019.
I do not trust the VantageScore and subscribe to MyFICO to get my credit score and credit monitoring services.
How could you make reliable credit building decisions to improve your credit score with unreliable credit score information?
I’m not the only one seeing this problem, a quick google search will turn up plenty of forum complaints and confusion surrounding the inaccuracy of the Chase Journey credit score, ‘Chase Bank Credit Journey Score - Inaccurate?’
In 2018 the hammer fell on VantageScore when the Federal Housing Finance Agency “prohibit(ed) the government-sponsored enterprises (Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac) from using the VantageScore credit scoring model,’ at least until the new policy is reviewed again in 2022.
Regardless of what you can read on VantageScores website about how they are providing their credit score to an entire industry of lenders, the government is dubious of the big three credit agencies credit score company.
Check with each of your Tradelines to see if they offer free credit scores and monitoring services. These have become financial industry standard offerings to members.
So much so they have prohibited their scoring model from being used in the underwriting process for mortgages to be held by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which account for 90% of U.S. real estate mortgages.
Often times, you can find a free credit score from your credit card companies and banking institutions.
Be sure that you have access to multiple different credit scores from various sources, preferably at least one FICO credit score.
If you see there is a considerable discrepancy in scores, you can always purchase your three FICO credit scores from MYFICO.
TransUnion VantageScore is not the only credit bureau score I have seen react inexplicably compared to my more stable FICO credit scores.
Check out the crazy thing that happened to my Equifax Vantage score when I disputed some Equifax records.
I wanted to be fair with My Chase Credit Score Journey and turned to their FAQ section to see if they could explain the disparity between the VantageScore vs FICO score, and this is what I found:
I have sent Chase Bank customer service a question asking ‘If the above is true, then why is my TransUnion FICO credit score 67 points higher than my VantageScore?’
I don’t expect a response.
Is There A Credit Journey Chase App
There is some confusion on the answer to ‘Is there a Chase Credit Journey App?’
Chase Bank does provide a mobile banking app for their customers that they can access their Chase Bank Credit Journey through the Chase credit score journey section.
However, there is no specific Credit Journey Chase app that all members can access, only Chase customers.
Unfortunately, if you are not a customer, you will have to login through the website.
Alternative Free Credit Score Options To Chase Bank Credit Journey
Today, there are many alternatives to Credit Journey Chase Bank that offer free credit scores through VantageScore and limited access to your credit report at one or two credit bureaus.
While Chase – Credit Journey from Chase offers some nice tools, we feel like Credit Sesame’s website is much more user friendly and provides a bit more for the same price...
You will still receive a TransUnion Vantage credit score from Credit Sesame the same as Chase Bank Journey Credit.
However, with Credit Sesame you will also get free ID protection and a much more robust education and credit building section.
You can sign up for your free credit score and ID protection with Credit Sesame today!
Another great resource we offer is an article on HOW TO GET A FREE CREDIT SCORE.
Overall, My Chase Bank Credit Journey has been a helpful credit tool, however limited and possibly untrustworthy.
Knowing that the free information inside Chase Credit Journey may not be the most accurate can help prevent a significant problem.
Use their free tools and take the opportunity to read through their credit education section.
If you do not want to take the chance and don’t want to worry and stress over whether you can trust the free credit score Chase information, consider MyFico for your credit score and monitoring services.
In all honesty, signing up for MyFico credit monitoring is probably the single, most important step I have taken to improve my credit score.
